VALDOSTA β" Look out Class AAAAA, the Lowndes Vikings are hitting their stride when it counts the most.
The Vikings (8-1, 5-1) played arguably their best game of the season Friday night, trouncing the Coffee Trojans 63-7 at Martin Stadium in their second-to-last game of the regular season.
All three phases of the game played a major roll in the Vikings' eighth blowout win of the season. The Vikings' offense scored touchdowns on all six of its possessions and the defense held Coffee (3-6, 1-5) to 170 yards.
The Vikings' special teams returned two punts for touchdowns, blocked two punts and recovered one for a touchdown.
Lowndes head coach Randy McPherson said after the game that he thought it was Lowndes ' best performance of the season.
βI think we got better,β McPherson said. βWe got to play a bunch of kids. They were ready to play. The coaches had a great game plan.β
As if the night wasn't special enough, the Vikings received the news in the third quarter that Warner Robins upset Northside, 21-20. The Vikings need a win next week and a Colquitt County win over Northside to win the region.
βIt'd be nice if they win,β McPherson said about Colquitt County with a grin.
Lowndes ' offense was literally unstoppable on offense the entire game against the Trojans. The Vikings had six possessions and scored touchdowns all six times. They totaled 327 yards, with 257 yards coming on the ground. Troy Braswell led the attack with six carries for 82 yards and a touchdown.
The Vikings ran five plays for 62 yards on their first possession and punched it into the end zone when Braswell ran it in from 4 yards out.
Coffee had a three-and-out on its first possession and Khary Franklin returned Coffee's punt to its 20 yard line. Five plays later, Robert Anderson scored on a 7 yard run. Geraldo Orta ran in a two-point conversion to make it 15-0.
Franklin showed his ankle is 100 percent on Lowndes ' next possession when he jumped over a defender and raced 21 yards for a touchdown.
Lowndes ' next score came on a punt return. Coffee's punter shanked one off the side of his foot, and while everyone ran down field, Telvin Smith picked up the ball and ran untouched into the end zone to make it 29-0.
Brian Moore blocked a punt and recovered it on Coffee's following possession. Orta turned the good field position into points when he ran in for a 10-yard touchdown to give the Vikings a 36-0 lead at the half.
In the second half, the Vikings passed for two touchdowns and scored twice on special teams.
The first score through the air came on a 9 yard pass to Franklin from Cole Parker.
Braswell then returned a punt 83 yards for a touchdown when Coffee went three-and-out.
With the game in hand, the Vikings' backups continued the scoring. Aaron Winston caught an 8 yard touchdown pass from Eric Blanton on fourth down to make it 56-7.
James Battle blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone to end the scoring at 63-7.
Coffee's only touchdown came on a 69-yard run by Carnillous Crockett late in the third quarter. Crockett's rush accounted for 41 percent of the Trojans' total offense.
Michael Copeland led the Vikings' defense with six tackles.
The Vikings play their final game of the regular season next Friday when they take on Warner Robins at Martin Stadium.
